Nevermind the Clickbait…

Craft beer is still King of Summer.

Spiked Seltzer- Why Do I Care?

Maybe you don’t, but many people are trading in their IPA’s for a lighter sweeter thing we call spiked seltzer. Depending on the brand, there are a myriad of ways in which these cans of summer nectar outshine their predecessors… the wine cooler.

Many people are not aware of what a “malt beverage” really is. Originally, a wine cooler was a wine mixed with juice, kind of like the alcoholic sweet tea sangria.

Sangria, for example, is an excellent example of what a wine cooler could be.

If you’ve ever had a Mike’s hard lemonade, or punished your friends with a Smirnoff Ice, any of many of summer’s carbonated favorites are also known as “Malternatives.”

What does this have to do with Spiked Seltzer?

Simply put, spiked seltzers have been absolutely dominating this summer.

The article (click) with the clickbait title that inspired this post basically credits White Claw for the market domination, but the reality is these Spiked seltzers, similarly to regular seltzers, are increasing in popularity this summer.

The numbers don’t mean anything in that article either, but the reality is apparent: People love these drinks.

White Claw Spiked Seltzer, as well as most of their competitors are:

  • 5% ALC/VOL
  •  100 calories
  • 2g carbs ” making them pretty health happy, gluten-sensitive and keto- friendly if you imbibe.

Who Else Makes Great Spiked Seltzer?

The most exciting drink of this summer (in my humble opinion) is brought to you by… *drumroll*…

Harpoon and Polar?!?!

Yes that’s right folks. Polar, the creators of the awesome summer seltzers like this one:

have collaborated with the likes of Harpoon to make Arctic Summer.

Click here to learn more about Arctic Summer. I discovered it by asking my little brother what it was when he came back from C.Liquors with it. Not only did he know about the Polar/Harpoon epic collaboration, he really enjoyed it.

Naturally gluten-free, 5% alcohol… seeing a trend here people?

Naaaah, Nah Nah Nah Nah… Here Comes the Upstander

bon_and_viv_spikedMaybe the OG Spiked Seltz at our store, “Spiked Seltzer”, or the white cans with the mermaids on them. At least originally, of their 6 ingredients, vodka and seltzer were the primary two.

Since they popped up in 2015, recipes and owners have changed. Now the single brewer from Boston is part of a company is called ‘Bon and Viv,” but the mermaids remain! Read more here

Fun fact: these guys used to be 6% alcohol and higher calorie. People were not happy to learn they lowered the alcohol content. (click for link.)

Because That’s the Way it Truly Is, Truly-uly-uly is…

Truly_spiked_seltzer_

Last and definitely not least, we’ve got Truly.

From their website:

” Truly Hard Seltzer is pure and clean. It contains no gluten, liquor or spirits. The alcohol (ABV 5%) comes from fermenting all natural cane sugar. Each of our styles has hints of fruit for a delicious flavor and clean finish. Clean

and simple.”

When a company is this upfront about their ingredients, recipe and process, we’ve got a good product people!
These guys are probably the most wallet friendly and also the least “hip”. Must I say more?

We want to know what you think! Are you riding the spiked seltzer waves this summer, or are you Corona (or Kona, for that matter) ride or die, tried and true? And “malternatives”… how do we feel about all that?

Until next time, stay carbonated! It is mid-July, after all…

XOXOXO,

Toast of Harwich: Whiskey Tasting

Posted by Cranberry Liquors Around Town, Featured, Local Spirits, Toast of Harwich, Uncategorized, Whiskey, Whiskey_On_Trend, Whiskey_Tasting, Wine Spritzer No Comments

Just in Case You Thought the Toast of Harwich was for Wine aficionados only, you are mistaken!

This year, the annual Toast of Harwich will be pouring High West Whiskey.

High West Whiskey is made in a distillery in Utah. This bourbon is excellent. high-west-american-prairie

These three whiskey bourbons are featured tastings at the Toast courtesy of Horizon Beverages:

– The American Prairie Bourbon
– High West’s Campfire Whiskey
– Rendezvous Rye

The names are not only cheesy and American, they have significance.

For instance, the American Prairie Bourbon™ donates 10% of the proceeds to the Prairie Reservation in Montana!

Nose: Light caramel and sweet vanilla
Taste: Rich and earthy on the palate with well balanced flavors of candy corn, honey nougat and sweet corn bread biscuits
Finish: Vanilla with a hint of caramel apple

Cranberry Liquors offers High West American Prairie Bourbon $31.99

The Rendezvous Rye is named after a annual “pelt-trade” from the mid-1800’s.
From High West’s Website:

Our flagship whiskey commemorates the first recorded whiskey-fest out West. From 1825 to 1840, the “rendezvous” was the annual summer gathering of mountain men to exchange pelts for supplies. Alcohol was not one of the “supplies” at the first rendezvous. This oversight was QUICKLY corrected with a generous supply of whiskey at the second rendezvous in Utah’s Cache Valley.

The Rendezvous Rye, for instance, is hot. As in spicy. Traditionally made with two rye mashes, these whiskey bourbons are not typical. They’re old school.

The Rendezvous Rye is a (top secret) blend of straight rye whiskies.

Cranberry Liquors sells the Rendezvous Double Rye Whisky for $38.99.

The High West Campfire Whiskey is another top secret blend. “A blend of bourbon, rye, and peated scotch whisky, ranging in age from 5-8 years old.” At 46%, or 92 proof, it is possibly the most dangerous and/or flammable.

The Campfire whiskey is also the most expensive at $61.99 (keep this in mind while tasting at the Wequassett Resort.) 😉

Perhaps most excitingly, these bourbon whiskeys are all 91-94 point award winners, from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate to Jim Murray’s or Whiskey Advocate. It’s super impressive to see so many awards from one outstanding company.

As mentioned previously, these three whiskeys will be available at this year’s Toast Of Harwich, this Saturday, April 28th.

To Read more about High West Bourbon Whiskeys and their proprietary, contractually undisclosed blends, click here.

Pro-tip: If you have no idea what to buy for bourbon, go for the one with the handwritten batch numbers (see bourbon to the right.)

Finally, if you are wondering where Joe will be this toast, I’ll give you three guesses (and the first two don’t count.)

There are still tickets left if you need to buy them. Click here to be lead to the Chamber of Commerce.

Barefoot Refresh Spritzer

Posted by Cranberry Liquors Blends, Tasting Wine, Wine Spritzer, Wines for Occasion No Comments

Have you ever been on a boat? How about a fisherman’s boat? Did you know that fishermen have crazy rules you must follow if you want to remain one their boat?

Well, they do. Some of Cranberry Liquor’s patrons are fishermen, and I got the run down! No pig (hotdogs, pork), for instance. No bananas. Absolutely NO 13’s – as in, you get to the 13th pickle, you toss it overboard.

Although those rules may be superstitious, there is a well-known rule for boats as well. No glass. No glassware. Why? It’s pretty straightforward – glass breaks.

So what to do if you’d like a glass of wine while watching the sunset on beautiful Cape Cod?

Barefoot wine is releasing a spritzer for the upcoming season. This summer, 2016, spiked seltzers and spritzers are now trending.

Barefoot Winery has been in business for over 30 years – but when they made the “Top 20 Wines” in 2005, they easily became the most popular wine in their category. With all of the awards they’ve accumulated, their brand noterietay and public footprint, not to mention their moscato (and their sweet red, crisp whites and bubblys easily trumped all of their competition.)

Fast forward to 2016 – Barefoot is taking it to a whole ‘nother ballgame… literally?

They’ve taken their most popular varietals – Crisp White and their Summer Red, made it “spritz,” and voila!

The owners of Barefoot Winery seem like great people. They actually did an AMA on Reddit! Both the “Ask Me Anything” and their website sort of expound on Barefoot’s origins, their business model, and their ultimate goal: To get wine into the hands of as many people as possible, affordably, deliciously, and comfortably.

And Barefoot’s new spritzer does exactly this: Unlike most ‘splits’ of wine (187ml), they’ve upped the amount to 250ml. They’ve got an amazing product, they’ve put the same great taste in a more casual container, and now you can drink your wine poolside, in a stadium, or, if you’re on Cape Cod this summer, on your boat.

To top it off, Barefoot’s winemaker Jen Hall says they’ve met a need.

“They are a true, original-style spritzer, designed to be lively on the palate,” explains Wall. “What we found was there were not any refreshing, outdoor, daytime occasion wines.”

Right now, Barefoot offers the Crisp White ( a blend of Chenin Blanc and Riesling) and their Sweet Red (blending white Moscato grapes and Pinot Noir Rose,) now spritzer style! They’re shareable and they’re a company known for great wine at an almost unbelievable price. These Refresh Spritzers are super summertime friendly.

Plus, it’s much easier to cut your foot on broken glass than an empty can.

Want to learn about these Spiked Seltzers I keep referring to? Leave me a message in the comments if you’re feeling bold!
