What Rhymes with Turkey?

Posted by Cranberry Liquors Event, Featured, Tasting Wine, Wines for Occasion No Comments

Vodka?

Thanksgiving dinner and wine go together splendidly, no matter what your celebration ends up serving or with whom you share the holiday. Barring a few exceptions, most celebrants enjoy some type of elaborately cooked meal and the debauchery associated with familial gatherings.

So whether the food is tofurkey or lasagna, bird or cranberry hemp marmalade, Cranberry Liquors currently has all the celebratory favorites (and the usual suspects for more habitual creatures.)

Without further ado…

Thanksgiving: What’s Hot

Sort of like squash soup, this year is all about Pinot Noirs. Unlike a Beaujolais Nouveau, Pinot Noirs are a far more versatile and well liked aperitif. The composition can range from fruity to dry, it drinks best with appetizers and turkeys and not a single wine enthusiast will turn down a good pinot noir.

Top contenders for reds that pair well with turkey include:

Pinot Noir: T-giving edition are, in general, fruitier wines. Other varietals that float to the top of mind include Garnacha,  Syrah, Red Bordeaux, Chateau Neuf Du Pape…

Basically? Stay away from Reds that are tannin heavy if you’re doing turkey. Like a cranberry sauce, you want this wine to bring the funk with berries!
Italian_Thanksgiving
White wines

When it comes to white wines, turkey birds are famously served with German whites like rieslings and other sweet varietals.

When might it make sense to serve Gwerztraminer, Riesling or Kabinett with Thanksgiving?

1. If you like white wines

2. If your hosting people who like white wines

3. If you plan to do anything interesting with spices

4. If you’re a rad hard traditionalist

When To NOT have a sweet white wine with Thanksgiving Dinner:

1. If you don’t like white wine

2. If your idea of a good white wine is a Sauvignon Blanc – every time

3. If you aren’t having turkey

4. If you have any sensitivity to headaches stemming from white wine (histamines, sugar content)

Sweeter white wines are often encouraged on Thanksgiving – be it a Gewürztraminer from Alsace, France or a Riesling from Germany, these wines are known for their ability to “tame the game” in food like turkey, and compliment that which is wicked spicy with its high sugar content.

If you haven’t been in to see what’s new, can we recommend stopping in soon? No matter what your day serves up, sweet white wines are only one option. We can’t begin to tell you how many ways our customers do thanksgiving – we promise to make you look like the sommelier we know you are.

PRO TIP: Come shop with us as soon as you can! We have promotional items throughout the store that will be there until we sell out. Our case discounts (6 bottle 10%, 12 bottle 20%) continue throughout the holidays – let those deals work in your favor!

I almost forgot: Rose? ALL DAY. Seriously, Rose will slay on Thursday.

Plus if you want the secrets as to what beer drinkers have on Thanksgiving, we’ve got you covered…

Yellow Tag Promotion

Posted by Cranberry Liquors About Us, Around Town, Craft Beer, Cranberry_Liquors_Promotion, Featured, Tasting Wine No Comments

Cape Cod has some pretty wonderful moments this time of year. While some switch their rose for cabernet, others are hitting the beach like it’s early May.

Whether it’s red, white or pink in your glass, Cranberry Liquors would like to make known another very important color in our store…
Cranberry_Liquors_Yellow_Tag_promotion

See this color? If you can’t, it’s a pretty loud yellow tag emblazoned upon an excellent red wine.

Our “Yellow Tag” wines are an indicator of three things.

1. It’s a great wine

2. It’s an even greater price

3. These wines are in beta mode.

So, what’s the deal? As your local liquor store, C.Liquors listens to our customers, our distributors and our palettes. however we don’t always listen to the groaning shelves in our store. Often times our eyes (and ideas) are bigger than our displays and floor space.

Rather than sell the same boring things, we decided to make room in the most mutually beneficial way possible. We Yellow Tag wines at an unreasonably good price and we get to buy more of the new, cool, trending and otherwise desirable stuff!

So What About Beta Mode?

Perhaps one of the coolest things about our Yellow Tag wines is our ability to see what we intend to restock. For example, if a customer buys the esoteric Australian wine we have tagged this week, and then buys the rest the following day, we may just be special ordering that wine for them.

Similarly, these yellow tags have started many engaging conversations with our loyal customers. Even if it were possible, it isn’t a great idea for us to try every product in our store. Furthermore, we would need the memory capacity of a superhero, not to mention perfect recall to properly account for our vast selection.

In other words, we need your opinions, palettes, suggestions and remarks to keep what you want on our shelves!

To review, these yellow tags are an indicator of:

  •  Great wine
  • Uncommon wine (it won’t be Kendall Jackson, folks…)
  • A price so good that my mom doesn’t know about this promotion (sorry Joe…hi mom)!
  • An invitation to flaunt your knowledge to your favorite CLiquor store clerk.

Keep us in the loop! We hope you are loving this incredible time of year as much as we are.

PS: You’ll find our Yellow Tags on premium spirits and craft beers too! There’s something for everyone at Cranberry Liquors.

Toast of Harwich 2017: THE TOAST POST

Posted by Cranberry Liquors About Us, Around Town, Drinking Beer, Event, Featured, Tasting Wine, Wines for Occasion No Comments

(Preamble: Cranberry Liquors wants to thank Baystone, Cape Cod Beer, Carolina, First Crush Horizon Beverages, Martignetti, Masciarelli, Monsieur Touton, MS Walker, Ruby and Trio Wine Company for their donations of product, their expert knowledge, excellent people and their donated time and service. The Toast of Harwich would not be the hyped up, killer event that it is today without Cranberry Liquors’ wine and beer reps dropping knowledge. Add this to the hard work of Harwich’s Chamber of Commerce and the participating restaurants on whom we could write a whole other post and… well, you’ve got the kind of night that C.Liquors is all about.

On behalf of Cranberry Liquors, thank you.)

Now…. on to the Toast Post!

If you’ve never been to a Toast of Harwich, you’re really missing out  Cranberry Liquors would like to rub it in your face  show you what an incredible evening we had yet another year.

Not unlike today, last Friday was a rainy, blah-weather day. In spite of this, the attendees came through looking brazenly amazing and ready to party.

Party we did, Cape Cod. We tasted some incredible wines,  raised money for our sleepy little town and looked dapper as all get out doing it.

There was music and people were dancing. We nearly maxed capacity at Mooncussers; let’s just say that the Toast was the place to be. Mooncussers was cozy and perfectly warm on an otherwise cold and dreary evening.

We didn’t go crazy snapping pictures… but we wish we did! Despite running out of cups at one point, the toast went off (as always) without a hitch!

If you have any pictures or comments from the Toast please share away in the comments! Feel free to tag us on Facey too 😉 if we like what we see there may be free swag in your future.

Next post: We’ve got this crazy idea… and we want you to be a part of it! (Hint: it involves winning and what we do best: great wine!)

Toast 2017: Support Harwichport (with a drink in your hand!)

Posted by Cranberry Liquors About Us, Around Town, Featured, Local Spirits, Premium Liquors, Tasting Wine No Comments

Every year, Harwich’s Chamber of Commerce gets together to combine brainpower, booze, beverage and food companies to raise money for sleepy Harwichport’s Chamber of Commerce.

Of course, there are things going on behind the scenes that make for an amazing event. Other than the hand picked wines, beers and spirits, each restaurant, business owner and chamber member gets together many, many early mornings to ensure each Toast goes off without a hitch.

If you’ve ever stopped into Cranberry Liquors on a Saturday afternoon, you’ve probably met our resident sommelier, Luke.

Cliqours-event-toast-of-harwich

Exhibit A.) Luke Lukasewski

Here you can see Luke with First Crush Winery at last year’s Toast of Harwich.

This year, we’ve stepped up Luke’s game: Luke will be pouring for our vendor Martignetti. One of our most outstanding vendors, Martignetti helps us keep everything from Tequila to Australian Shiraz on our shelves.

(You can see their mega-tron list of product here.)

Like many of our vendors, Martignetti keeps Harwich’s toast afloat, varying the products they will be pouring this 2017.

Here are the names of a few wines Martignetti is bringing to party with:

  • Wente Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Chalk Hill Chardonnay
  • Lincourt Pinot Noir
  • chalk-hill-chardonnay-sonoma-coast-Cranberry_liquors

  • Lincourt-2012-Pinot-Noir-Lindsays

This event truly supports Harwich’s Chamber of Commerce throughout the year, as this is definitely the biggest fundraiser (and dare we say the coolest?), hence the reason so many local restaurants attend and sponsors come forth.

For instance, just as we have Martignetti (think of the biggest and strongest friend you would hope would be there to help) we have Astraluna as well. You may not know them by their LLC’s name – Astraluna, but does Cape Cod Vodka ring a bell?

How about this…

Chatham-Great-White-Rum-Front-500h

Astraluna’s distillery is in Medfield, MA… but don’t tell the tourists that! All joking aside, this South Shore spirits company makes Cape Cod Vodka, Rum and Gin, and is actually in the process of relocating their distillery to Cape Cod. We don’t just sell the “Cape Cod” liquors to tourists either, as they are quite good.

Normally we see Joe Sullivan, as we typically see the people who visit our store and (sometimes quite literally) help us stock the shelves with what you, the customers, want! This year, Allen Scott (our new Astraluna salesperson!) will be representing Astraluna at the toast.

You can read more about Astraluna and their spirits by clicking here.

There’s still time to get your tickets to the Toast of Harwich! If you can’t make the toast, you can still donate to the chamber and all of their projects (the flower boxes along Main Street is just where it starts!)

Toasting the Local Spirits: Cape Cod Beer and First Crush Winery

Posted by Cranberry Liquors About Us, Around Town, Blends, Craft Beer, Drinking Beer, Featured, Local Spirits, Seasonal Beer, Tasting Wine No Comments

If you haven’t noticed already, there are a few celebrated local companies that have helped keep Cape Cod in the proverbial loop.

Craft beer lovers everywhere rave about Cape Cod Beer, a brewery smack dab in the middle of Hyannis. Cranberry Liquors’ staff remembers when people would see a few guys cruising around, hand delivering their growlers of Cape Cod Red. Since then, an IPA, Amber Ale and Beach Blonde, as well as several limited edition and seasonal beers have been added to their selection.

Oh… and they’ve outgrown their growlers (but they are still available on tap!)

Cape-cod-beer-localCape Cod Beer will be doing what they do best this Toast of Harwich; actively supporting their community with time and product. The people at Cape Cod Beer continue to succeed with their innovative beers and events (does anyone else have a ‘Race to the Pint’ sign in their front yard?)

One visit to their website and you’ll understand… with these guys “It’s All About the Beer” …and being good to the Cape that’s been so happy to have them.
Find out more about Cape Cod Beer’s and what they are up to this month by clicking here.

A little bit newer to the scene, rapidly winning over locals and visitors alike is First Crush Winery. When Cranberry Liquors first came into contact with First Crush Winery, we knew that this Harwich native was onto something great. Dr. Frank D. Puzio, formerly known for his optometry business, began importing grapes from his friends in Northern California, and First Crush’s excellent product started winning awards soon after.

During Cranberry Liquors’ first summers carrying First Crush we had a hard time keeping their wines on the shelf! Curious locals and visitors looking for something local alike swooped up whatever Sauvignon Blancs, Red blends and “Cape Cod cranberry” infirst-crush-wineryfused wines we carry. Fortunately for us, Dr. Puzio’s winery is only a few miles from our store on Main St Extension in Harwich.

Read all about First Crush’s award winning wines by clicking here.

First Crush Winery and Cape Cod Beer will be pouring at Mooncussers Inn and Tavern this Toast of Harwich. Both the brewery and the winery will be donating to the silent auction, and tasting their local products.

Remember: Mooncusser’s Inn and Tavern is where the V.I.P. reception and silent auction will be held this year! Read more about the event and get your tickets here today!

Toast of Harwich: Trio Wines

Posted by Cranberry Liquors About Us, Around Town, Featured, Tasting Wine No Comments

Last year, I got to know one of my favorite people that I see at Cranberry Liquors. His name is Mark, and there are over a dozen reasons why he’s awesome.

Mind you, I didn’t meet this person last year (but I did meet his beautiful wife!) Actually, I got to know Mark a few summers ago working a crazy shift at C.Liquors. A lot of commotion was churning within our little store… and Mark just so happened to be bringing us Primarius Pinot Noir – we ran out a day before.

Mark walked in to:

  • A man whose classic car was broken in the parking lot
  • The chaos of a Wednesday prior to stroll night (it’s a thing)
  • An employee up to her eyeballs with customers
  • A sporadic group of wandering bar-hoppers

Complete and utter chaos…

So what did he do? Like any reasonable person, he ran away.

Ok, actually, like no person I know, he stepped in and helped me out. He has experience with local talent, he and my dad get along, and that’s pretty much all he knew about me at the time.

And he helped me out anyway.

Toast-of-Harwich-trio-wines

A most excellent dude. (Mark from Trio with his lovely wife)

See this man? This is an awesome person. A local Harwich-ian, no less!

And like Mark would, he’ll be at the toast of Harwich, donating his time and his company’s wine for another amazing celebration.

Besides Primarius Pinot Noir, how might you know Trio?

You will know right away when you stop by Mooncussers, where Mark and company will be pouring wine and spirits at the V.I.P. reception. Trio Wines donated a wine basket to the silent auction, a staple of Harwich’s yearly toast.

Check out Trio Wine Company on the web here.

Don’t forget to get your tickets! Click here to get your Toast of Harwich Tickets for 2017. Like we mentioned previously, General Admission is $65, and $100 will get you access to V.I.P. reception at Mooncussers Inn and Tavern.

Like we said before, we are out-toasting ourselves this year – this will be the Toast that Harwich never forgets!

Toast Of Harwich 2017: 400 East

Posted by Cranberry Liquors About Us, Around Town, Featured, Tasting Wine, Wines for Occasion No Comments

If you’re a customer at Cranberry Liquors, the name “Monsieur Touton” is probably already a familiar one. The staff at Cranberry Liquors talks to our wine reps on a weekly basis (at minimum!)

Our wine reps are a huge part of the selection we pride ourselves on at Cranberry Liquors. Every year for the Toast of Harwich, Joe and our wine reps get together to exact a plan: Who will be serving what, where will they be, which wines will they be donating… it’s quite a process, really.

Jim DeMayo is our wine rep for Monsieur Touton – an amazing wine distributor that primarily sells French whites and roses, as well as pinot noir from France to Oregon. According to Jim, Cranberry Liquors does an excellent job selling his wines. You may or may not know Jim, but we love him!

Monseiur Touton Website

Monseiur Touton Website

Jim will be pouring several wines from Monsieur Touton this May 5 at Hub #2: 400 East.

Without giving away everything Jim will be pouring for his tasting, you can see Monsieur Touton’s selection here.

You can see they have a pretty excellent regional map from which you can see all of their offerings. We’ll give you a hint: Joe’s wife is from France.

Can you guess what Jim will be serving?

Guess correctly in the comments and we’ll hook you up with a prize!

Trust C.Liquors, Buy From Spain

Posted by Cranberry Liquors Best_New_Wine, Featured, Tasting Wine, Uncategorized, Wine on trend No Comments

Made in the USA: Buy Imported, Get Dazzled

I just read a fabulous quick hit on great wines from South America. I’m paraphrasing, but the guy writes that when people think “Imported Wine” places like Italy or France are top of mind.

Meanwhile, an equally adversarial Spain gets snubbed.

as Jerry Seinfield might have put it

“Whats the de-aaaal with that?”

You Had Me at Rio... ja?

RIOJA
Spain: You Want What They're Having

From what I’ve researched, I have reached a conclusion: Marketing.

Spain doesn’t do nearly enough marketing. Fair enough, right? People don’t know you have a great product, so they go buy the wines they know.

Here’s where it gets a little bit crazy: Spanish wine is an insane commodity.

In fact, if you have ever enjoyed a glass of wine, you’ve probably already had Spanish wine and loved it, and had absolutely no idea that’s what you were drinking.

Apparently, Similarly to olive oil, Spain will export its fermented grape juice over to Italy and France, where Italians and Frenchies are happy to take all the credit, touting the wines as their own.

Seriously! This really happens! In 2014 Spain surpassed Italy as the largest exporter of wine in the world.

Spain’s biggest customer is France, who buys Spanish wines at about .50 cents a liter. Then France and Italy bottle the juice, selling it for a mere $1.50 a liter.

There’s a second piece of Spain’s wine conundrum: There are so many kinds of Spanish wine, and it’s a challenge for customers to decipher good from bad, let alone varietal from varietal. It’s no wonder that people resort to their same habits, their same old Kendall Jackson. To  make matters worse, the very controlling “Control Board” of Spain doesn’t allow Vineyards to say in what area the wine was made.

“It is illegal in Rioja to mention vineyard names or villages on labels, unless the village happens to be part of the physical address of the winery. Imagine if all red Burgundy were sold as Bourgogne Rouge… Rioja is almost as complicated as Burgundy once you start to understand its vineyards.”

So now, we know that:

A. Spain has excellent wine

B. Spain has excellent wine that is incredibly undervalued by virtue of several hurdles

C. Spain has A TON of wine

…how do we best determine how to buy our next Rioja, Albariño or Tempranillo? That is, other than making your purchases at Cranberry Liquors, who take much of the difficulty away from the situation by selecting your selections, how do we further determine which wine is your wine?

Rioja - Pyramid of Awesome

Rioja_Crianza_Riserva_Difference

The Nuts and Proverbial Bolts...

Here are a few wines we absolutely recommend, along with suggestions for selecting your new favorite import.

Price

Although price may seem like an obvious clue into what’s worth buying, it isn’t that cut and dry. Price does matter. It matters a lot, especially when we consider how else we can gauge the worth of what we buy.

However, if I were to compare a pinot noir from Sonoma County and a Tempranillo from Spain, their median price points wouldn’t even be close.

TL;DR: A 20 dollar Spanish wine will blow your mind, unlike some wines.

Keywords

This is sort of a contradictory clue, as I just quoted an article wherein a major winemaker in Spain expounds on having to break the law to “tell the story” behind the wine. This B.A. winemaker doesn’t care; He recognizes the importance of marketing the story the wine tells, and a big part of that story is from where that wine began.

So when you’re looking for your next inexpensive white wine to please your mother-in-law who only likes Pinot Grigio, give DoZoe a try – this Albariño has grown in popularity over the past year or so, and has received special favor from the white wine lovers. At $10.99, I can assure you you will be back to buy this one again.

If you’re looking for something a little dressier, I’d point you to the Licia without a second thought. Licia’s Albarino is undoubtedly one of the nicer Spanish whites we carry, and I only have one criticism of it! The bottle is too darn dark for customers (and employees) to determine whether the wine is red or white.

The Licia is an excellent bottle, and the story behind the wine is pretty excellent too, not that many people know it. Jose Limeres grew his own wine in 1985 after searching for a consistently good vineyard to no avail. Limeres hoped to stock his own restaurants, and after a fruitless search, he grew his own! The northwestern lush climate, the composition of the soil and the proximity to the ocean made for a perfect mix of acidity and sugar.

TL;DR: For almost 5 dollars more than the DoZoe, the Licia Albariño will impress you.

Go From What You Know

This might be a little weird, but my mom (the little french lady I often mention) loves to pick up a bottle of wine and say things like “You see zis? See how heavy zis bottle is? I like zis. I bet zis is a great wine.”

In all honesty, it was a great bottle of wine. More to the point however, having grown up in a liquor store, I definitely recommend trusting your instincts. Intuition is more likely to help you than hurt you in this case. Plus, I have some excellent Rioja infotainment for you to graduate from beginner to novice in the spaniard region of our store (I believe we call it the “second aisle.”)

Rioja used to be called “vin joven” and some winemakers still put that on the label. Translated, vin joven means “young wine” and thanks to wine folly, we can call this type of Rioja the “base model Tempranillo.”

Then there’s the MVP – the Crianza. Ever wonder why some wines have almost the exact same label, but different prices? We can always use logic when reading “Reserve” or “Riserva”, but what about Crianza? What am I supposed to make of that information? Crianza was created to be a high-quality daily drinking wine, with a minimum aging period of 6 months. Using the Lan as an example, the Crianza is the “most accessible” Rioja. At 12.99, the Lan Crianza is “a tremendous value” and will pair well with the same things with which you’d drink a Cabernet.

TL;DR Crianza = Cabernet at value pricing

Lastly, we have Riserva and Gran Riserva.

“This is where Rioja tastes serious. At the Reserva level, winemakers often age their wines longer than the minimum and select better grapes. Many Rioja wine enthusiasts swear by Reserva level because they are a medium between super fruity Crianza and oakey-bottle-aged Gran Reserva.”

Oak barrel aging, and just plain aging, are two key ingredients to both the Riserva and the Gran Riserva.

Riserva is sworn by as the “go to” Rioja, touting the greatest bang-for-your-buck and for having the highest success rate as far as pleasing the consumer.

With the Gran Riserva you are getting:

  • High quality ingredients
  • Longer aging
  • And “Selected wines from exceptional vintages which have spent at least 2 years in oak casks and 3 years in the bottle. For white wines, the minimum aging period is 4 years, with at least one year in casks.” (thank you riojawines.com.)
